Origin The cultivation of the potato originated in the Andean mountain range, where this plant evolved and crossed with other wild plants of the same genus, presenting a great variability. Its cultivation reached Europe in the sixteenth century, especially through Spain around 1570, from where it spread throughout the continent. Actually the development of its cultivation began in the eighteenth century, when after 200 years, progressively, it was acquiring some importance.
