This plant is very appreciated for its fruit, the chayote, which is attributed important nutritional properties. It is native to America and the main growing centers are in Mexico, Costa Rica and Guatemala, but its cultivation extends to Argentina. It was during the Spanish conquest of America that the chayotera passed from the other side of the ocean and nowadays we can find crops in Italy, India and China.
